HPA’s webinar series continues. The last one was held on March 30, 2021, was followed by  35  participants

 Competent academics and experts, most of whom were foreigners, discussed the current state of water infrastructure and water management in the Middle East, Euphrates, and Tigres River Basin.

The Hydropoliticss Academy of Ankara – Turkey organized on the 30 of March a Webinar on Transboundary Water Management under the title:

EVALUATION of CURRENT STATE of WATER INFRASTRUCTURE and MANAGEMENT in the EUPHRATES  TIGRIS BASIN - A roadway from Analysis to Diplomacy

The webinar covered the following topics:

  • The legal, political and institutional setups related to water resource management between riparian states.
  • The infrastructure constructed by the riparian states, its current condition and what damages has been caused by the security, political instability over the last decade.
  • How technology and the science community can help facilitating an evaluation of the efficiency of the infrastructure and policy making among riparian states.
  • What political, policy, institutional and cooperation setups will be needed to sustain fair shares of the water resources, and what macro-economy atmospheres need to be created.

The webinar hosted a number of internationally renowned speakers who are affiliated with institutions working on the subject:

Dr. Fadi Georges Comair, Water diplomat and international negotiator specialized in the Middle East region. Member of the French Overseas Academy of Sciences and Water Academy in France. President of UNESCO's IHP Council

Topic: “Intergovernmental Hydrological Program Strategy”

 

Prof. Dr. Mara TIGNINO, Lead Legal Specialist, at the Platform for International Water Law, Geneva Water Hub Reader, Faculty of Law and Institute for Environmental Sciences, University of Geneva

Topic: "Water rights under international law, particularly in conflict-affected regions, the Euphrates-Tigris Basin as an example".

Topic: “Towards Sustainable Cooperation in Euphrates Tigris Region: Water as a Dialogue Entry Point”.

Topic: “A General evaluation of the water infrastructure in the Euphrates-Tigris Basin”

Topic:  "The Role of Turkey in Promoting Integrated Development in the E-T Basin."

After the speakers,  experts participating in the panel asked  several questions and made some comments

Experts from Turkey , Lebanon,Jordan, Iraq, Brasil,Tanzania, Japan,Sweeden, Switzerland and France actively contributed to the event by taking the floor.

Experts shared their views that how to manage transboundary waters in the region. Emphasis was placed on the importance of confidence-building by economic relations in solving these problems. In addition, it was claimed that the work and cooperation of civil society, the press, universities could increase social awareness,

Some participants suggested establishing new initiatives coordinated by HPA, in cooperation with universities and non-governmental organizations for this region.

The presentations were followed by a Q&A session where the speakers and participants made clarifying remarks about the subjects covered in the Webinar and agreed to continue cooperating with the Hydropolitics Academy and among themselves, as the subject continues to be among the most urging transboundary water management issues of our time.

 

At the end of the event, HPA Director Dursun Yıldız and Moderator Kamal Jalouqa thanked to all speakers and pariticipants for their great effort and contrubutions to the webinar.

The participants expressed their gratitude by expressing that it was a very productive international meeting where scientific and information-based analyzes were made on the issues and very valuable suggestions were shared.
