Sustainable Water Resources Management for Jordan

  HPA News -International Expert Round Table Meeting on Sustainable Water Resources Management for Jordan, which was held at Darat Othman Bdeir-GJU on August 28th 2018 was concluded.The event was attended by experts on water and development from GJU and other Jordanian institutions and also from the Hydropolitics Academy in Ankara-Turkey. His Royal Highness Prince Hassan Bin Talal attended part of the event where he gave a valuable speech to the participants on the challenges faced by Jordan in terms of Geopolitical, Climatic, Political and Resources especially water resources, and the efforts put forward by Jordan to maintain its development under these challenges. HRH also advised policy makers in Jordan and in the region to get into multilateral and regional rather than  bilateral  dialogues to resolve issues that concern all countries especially in the field of water resources. Prior to that HE Dr. Munther Haddadine former minister of water and irrigation gave a keynote speech on how water resources could be managed and developed under stress conditions of water scarcity, climate change and limited energy resources, especially the relationship between water and energy resources as water cannot be obtained, transported  and distributed to end users without a sufficient supply of energy. Eng. Kamal Jalouqa director of Darat Othman Bdeir, GJU made a presentation on how water resources, land suitability for development, climate change, availability of water resources affect the distribution of urban settlements and economic development, and how these human activities affect the distribution of resources and contribute to the negative effects of climate change. And gave a brief description of alternative water resources that could be utilised by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Eng. Dursun Yıldız, president of Hydropolititcs Academy in Turkey gave an overview of the project Peace Pipeline, once proposed by the late president of Turkey Turgut Ozal, and how this project could contribute to regional cooperation in the fields of water resources and the development of the region at large. Eng. Yildiz also pointed out that  water problems can be solved  by high level  regional cooperation that will benefit all parties. At the end of the meeting Eng. Zaineb Abu Zaid from the Minsitry of Water and Irrigation gave a presentation of present and future plans for water resource management. Then the floor was opened for suggesting any recommendations by the other participants, who reiterated the need to continue with this discussion on water resources, and especially the need to consider the alternative resources and utilisation technologies presented in the meeting.
