Public water management can take different shapes and forms depending on national
legislation and administrative organisation. Still, it refers to the provision of drinking water supply
and/or sanitation services by structures that are entirely publicly owned and publicly controlled.
Oversight and responsibility are in the hands of elected officials, who are accountable to citizens.
As they do not respond to private shareholders and the drive for profits, the objective of public
water operators is to work in the general interest to provide essential services to the population.
